Washington, D.C. ( 12/18/2010) - Don't Ask Dont Tell is a policy that says if you are gay, you can only serve in the military as long as you don't tell anyone in the military that you are gay. If you say that you are gay, you will be kicked out.
On Saturday, the Senate voted to make this law disappear from the military. The vote was 63 for and 31 against. As long as the President signs the bill, then gay people will be able to serve in the military without the fear that they are going to get kicked out if someone finds out.
President Obama has already announced that he will sign the bill when it comes to his desk.
Some people, like Senator McCain, say that letting gay people serve openly in the military will make the military weaker. Other people say that if you are willing to die for your country then you should not have to hide who you are.
Questions:
1. Where did this story take place?
2. When did this story take place?
3. What does Don't Ask Dont Tell say?
4. What was the vote on Saturday?
5. What does Senator McCain say about gay people in the military?
6. What do you think about the issue? Should gay people be able to serve in the military or not? Explain your answer.

PORT CHARLOTTE, Florida (12/15/2010) -- A high school basketball player could face criminal charges after throwing a referee to the ground.
The incident happened during a game between Florida's Port Charlotte and DeSoto high schools.
"This is very disappointing. It's unacceptable," said DeSoto school superintendent Adrian Cline. "I've been a superintendent for a number of years and a principal for years before that and this is the first time I've been confronted with a student attacking an official."
In video posted on YouTube it appears DeSoto player Mason Holland got mad after a call.
Things escalated and the referee ejected him from the game. That's when Holland charged the referee, slamming him to the court.
"It reflects in a negative way - on the school, the school district, the country and that's why we take it extremely seriously," Cline said.
School board officials said Holland has been suspended from school and he could face criminal charges.
The Florida High School Athletic Association say they plan on administering their own punishment. The FHSAA says they can't say what their punishment for Holland will be because they're still investigating.
Cline said this student's athletic future is uncertain.
"The school district has always displayed good sportsmanship and we were very disappointed and intend to take appropriate action," he said.
Cline has spoken with the State Attorney's Office and will find out in the coming days if Holland could face criminal charges.
Questions:
1. Where did this story take place?
2. When did this story take place?
3. What is the name of the player that attacked the referee?
4. Why did he attack the referee?
5. Why is the player going to face criminal charges?

Story:
New York City (12/11/10) - If you want to go skating this winter, stick to a rink.
That's the word from city parks officials who are telling New Yorkers to stay away from frozen lakes and ponds at the start of the winter season.
The Parks Department says that just because a lake or pond looks frozen, that doesn't mean it is.
Ice must be at least six inches thick before it can take the weight of a person. For that to happen, the temperature needs to be well below freezing for weeks.
"We have a very urgent message to New Yorkers which is very simply this: Stay off the ice. We know right now it's definitely not thick enough to go on and you place yourself in grave danger. You could die."
The Parks Department also urges residents to never leave children or pets by themselves near a lake or pond.
If you find yourself on ice and hear cracking, lie down to try to spread out your weight.
And if you see someone falling through ice, don't attempt a rescue. Instead call 911 immediately.
Ice skating rinks are open throughout the city as a safe alternative.
Questions:

Homework - Rec center prices are going to increase

Story:
The Bronx (12/8/2010) - The Parks Department's 32 recreation centers are almost like hidden gems. Many adults don't know about them and those who do really appreciate the work out space.
But some people may be leaving if a proposal goes through to raise the fees for adults who use the recreation centers. Right now, they pay $50 a year, $75 a year at sites that have a pool. In an effort to help close the budget gap, the Parks Department is thinking about doubling the fee to $100 or $150 next year.
Some members who are trying to stay in shape at St. Mary's Center in Mott Haven say no way to the increase in money. St. Mary's center has a full gym and is located in the park right across the street. It has a pool, a gym and 2 indoor basketball courts. It is open from 9am to 9pm.
"I think the city can find other ways to find money to close their budget," said one recreation center user.
"One-fifty? No, I don't think so. No good for me or many people," said another.
Over at the Hunts Point Recreation Center, others felt the same way. The Hunt’s Point Recreation Center is located at 765 Manida Street.
"The cost of living in New York City is very high. So to charge a hundred dollars for people especially who are low income or working poor is very very difficult," said one recreation center user.
If the increases do go through, for those who cannot afford a full year membership, they can join for six months.
The proposal calls for seniors to see an increase from $10 a year now, up to $25 next year.
The facilities will remain free for kids under 17.

1. Where did this story take place?

Story:
The Bronx (12/5/2010) - New York Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter has reached an agreement with the team on a three-year deal worth $51 million.
The deal would be a slight pay cut for the Yankee captain, who is coming off his worst year at the plate with a .270 average and just 10 home runs.
Despite his decline last year, Yankees fans who spoke with NY1 this weekend said they are happy to have Jeter back.
"I'm really glad that they agreed on a deal because I think he's a major, key player for the Yankees. He's a really good captain so I was really hoping actually that they'd sign him again," said one Yankees fan.
"I think Jeter needs to stay with the Yankees. I couldn't really picture him with any other baseball team," said another.
"I thought he would resign, hoping he'd resign and I can't see him as anything other than a Yankee," said a third.
Jeter, 36, has spent his entire career with the Yankees, and won five World Series with the team.
He is on pace to reach his 3,000th hit next season -- a milestone no Yankee has ever reached while in pinstripes.

Harlem (11/30/2010) - The Department of Education has removed the principal from the Harlem school that had one of its students drown during a school trip to the beach.
Jose Maldonado-Rivera is now no longer the principal of Columbia Secondary School.
He was put on probation and lost his tenure rights after 12-year-old Nicole Suriel died while swimming in Long Beach in June.
The girl and her classmates were allowed in the water, even though lifeguards were not on duty.
Some parents and students told NY1 Tuesday that they will defend the principal.
"Mr. Maldonado was an exceptional individual, very unique, and he had a clear vision," said a parent. "Whatever the problem was, or whatever the finding was by the DOE I think that all in all he did a good job."
Maldonado-Rivera said the penalty he is facing is excessive and unfair to the school and its students.

The Bronx (11/28/2010) - Police say a burglary Sunday at a Catholic school in the Bronx may be connected to a string of similar crimes at churches over the past month.
In total, three churches and two Catholic schools have been hit, the most recent Sunday night.
Police say the burglar broke in through a gymnasium window at Our Lady of Refuge School in Bedford Park before 7:30 p.m.
In addition to two laptops, a scanner, and a digital video camera, more than a thousand dollars in cash was stolen -- a portion of which was going to be used to take kindergartners to see a musical at Lehman College.
The principal of the school says she feels violated.
"It's very difficult because when you steal from the school you're really stealing from the children and a lot of the children are on scholarship and so they really can't afford too much and so whatever extra money I have is to purchase things for them. A pair of shoes, a coat, pair of glasses, and that's who gonna go to," said Our Lady of Refuge School Principal Marivel Colon.
Police suspect two burglars were involved.
The other incidents all took place between November 6th and Thanksgiving.

Story:
New York City (11/19/2010) - Most libraries across the five boroughs will be forced to close their doors an additional day each week as the city’s library system faces a $20 million budget cut.
Eighth-grader Alexis Simmons is a frequent visitor to the Bedford-Stuyvesant library.
“I get better grades when I do my work here because there are accessories here that I don't have at home, like a dictionaries and encyclopedias,” she said.
Simons said she also uses the library's computers because she and her sister, Diamond, don't have Internet access at home. They come to the library every day it's open.
“It feels cozy and happy,” said Diamond Simmons.
The library is already closed Mondays and Sundays, and there is no big book store nearby.
There are about 240 libraries in the three independent library systems – the New York Public Library, which covers Manhattan, Staten Island and the Bronx; the Brooklyn Public Library; and the Queens Borough Public Library.
Elizabeth Lewis runs the literacy program for the Brooklyn libraries.
“During tough economic times, we see more people who are trying to find jobs, get help, learning how to read and write, and with English speaking skills,” said Lewis.
City Councilman Vincent Gentile of Brooklyn chairs a library subcommittee and says everyone has to share in the pain of closing the city's $3.3 billion budget gap.
“We are not suggesting that this cut not be part of the overall system. We, as a city, have to work with the libraries to minimize the impact that these cuts will have,” the councilman said.
Gentile says the council might be able to allow one library in each area to stay open the additional day the other libraries will have to be closed.
Questions:
1. Where did this story take place?
2. When did this story take place?
3. How many libraries are there in NYC?
4. How do libraries help students to get their work done?
5. Why will the libraries now have to close their doors an additional day a week?

Story:
NYC (11/18/2010) - Have you ever eaten at the mall? The Today Show did a 3 month investigation into the restaurants in the mall food court and found a lot of problems that could be dangerous for our health. They investigated 3 malls in 3 different states. One of the malls was South Street Seaport which is in downtown Manhattan.
The investigation found that all the malls had serious violations of the health code. In the South Street Seaport 83% of the restaurants in the mall had serious violations. The first violation was keeping food at the wrong temperature, like leaving raw food out of the fridge. This could cause bacteria to grow on the food and make people sick. The second violation was vermin like roaches and mice. These animals cannot be around food safely because they spread germs like salmonella. The third violation was employees not washing their hands before they touch the food.
Questions:

Story:
NYC (11/15/2010) - On Monday, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced the top three contenders for the "Taxi of Tomorrow," a search that started three years ago.
"We have never before worked with the auto industry to design a taxicab especially for New York City. That is until now," Bloomberg said.
The finalists were designed by Ford, Nissan, and Karsan, a Turkish company. All three are higher and boxier than current taxis. Each has more leg room and trunk space than what's available now, although the Nissan has more than the others and is also designed to one day run on electricity.
The mayor thinks that NYC needs a special kind of taxi because regular cabs do not last long enough in the city.
All of the finalists are fuel efficient. The city is also requiring the manufacturers to keep the cost comparable to the price of the cabs you see on the streets now.
New Yorkers can go online to nyc.gov and answer a quick survey. If you give your opinion you will be entered in a contest to win free cab rides for a year.
The mayors' office says it hopes to pick the winner early next year.
The new taxis are expected to hit the streets in the fall of 2014.

New York City (11/7/2010) - After months of training, thousands of runners who traveled from across the globe made their way through the five boroughs Sunday as they took part in the 2010 ING New York City Marathon.
The 26.2 mile -- which featured runners from over 100 countries -- kicked off on the Staten Island side of the Verrazano Bridge.
Gebre Gebremariam of Ethiopia won the men's title.
It was his first try at the marathon.
Another Ethiopian man was the favorite, but world-record holder Haile Gebrselassie pulled out at the 16-mile mark with an apparent right knee injury.
Kenya's Edna Kiplagat won the women's race for her first major marathon championship.
Chilean miner Edison Pena and some NY1 staffers -- including Brooklyn Reporter Jeanine Ramirez, Bronx Reporter Dean Meminger, and Health Reporter Kafi Drexel -- were among the more than 43,000 runners competing.
Race organizers say this year's participants collected roughly $1 million per mile to benefit more than 190 different groups.
"There are so many people out here doing the same thing, running for charities all over the city, the country, all over the world and and it's New York at its best coming together," Drexel said.
"I've run two 13 miles, a 15 mile, a 16 mile, and a 20 mile. The 20 mile almost killed me but I said I'm not going to go the whole 26 until race day, but I think I'm ready for it," Meminger said.
The marathon course weaved its way through Brooklyn and Queens, crossed into Manhattan, turned around in the Bronx, and wrapped up in Central Park -- giving an estimated 2.5 million spectators plenty of chances to cheer along the way.

Homework - Lead in the water!
Read the story. Watch the video. Answer the questions.
Click HERE to watch the video.
Story:
New York City The city is advising New Yorkers to run their tap water for at least 30 seconds before using it, after the Department of Environmental Protection discovered elevated levels of lead in a recent tap water sampling. The problem was found mainly in older buildings where lead plumbing was commonly installed and is still in use.
"These types of service lines and fixtures were phased out nearly two decades ago, but they are still found in many homes and under certain conditions lead can leach from the pipes and fixtures into tap water," said DEP Commissioner Cas Holloway.
Those pipes and fixtures are often found in buildings built before 1961 and some plumbing lines installed between 1983 and 1986. DEP believes about 100,000 buildings are affected, including apartment buildings, individual homes and businesses.
High levels of lead can cause serious neurological problems, especially in young children and pregnant women. Yet health officials say the public should not be alarmed by this announcement, only aware.
"Run your tap. The water is healthy to drink. When you run your tap until it's cold, you're getting the New York City main water and that's very safe and healthy," said Dr. Thomas Farley, the city health commissioner.
DEP does lead testing every year as a federal requirement, and if results show a more than 10 percent elevated level, the public has to be alerted.
This latest round by DEP's tests showed a 14-percent elevation in samples taken from 126 homes, so the agency is launching a campaign to let people know.
"Always use cold water for drinking, cooking, or making baby formula, even after the tap has been run, because lead can dissolve into hot water more quickly," said DEP Commissioner Cas Holloway. "Never boil water to get lead out. Boiling actually can concentrate lead, which is not what you want to do. Clean your faucet screens."
New Yorkers who want to test their water can receive free kits from the city. Call 311 for more information.
Questions:
1. Where did this story take place?
2. When did this story take place?

Story:
Chile, South America (10/13/2010) - Yesterday at 9pm, Shift Foreman Luis Alberto Urzua became the 33rd and last miner to travel the 2,000-feet journey back to the earth's surface in a one-person rescue capsule in Copiapo, Chile.
Urzua is being credited with keeping his men alive during the first 17 days of their ordeal by keeping them calm and rationing their food.
The rescue effort, which began shortly before midnight Tuesday, was virtually glitch-free thanks to the capsule's spring-loaded wheels, which were greased to endure a smooth ride through the hard rock shaft.
Chile's health minister says all the miners are getting immediate medical attention and are in good health, despite being underground since August 5 when the mine collapsed.
Florencio Avalos, 31, was the first miner to take the 15-minute journey back to the earth's surface.
Mario Sepulveda Espina, the second miner rescued, was the most excited of the group to be rescued thus far. His shouts were heard even before the capsule peeked above the surface.
After hugging his wife, Sepulveda Espina handed out souvenir rocks to laughing rescuers.
The youngest miner, 19-year-old Jimmy Sanchez, was pulled out fifth and the oldest miner, 63-year-old Mario Gomez, was pulled out ninth. The miners were underground for 69 days.
