Story:
New york City (9/23/2010) - Many more New York City students were held back from going to the next grade this year, said the Department of Education.

The DOE says when school let out for the summer in June, more than 22,000 students in third through eighth grades were not given the okay to go on to the next grade level.

Out of those 22,000 students who were sent to summer school, 50% them did not pass and had to repeat the grade in the fall. That's 11,000 students. Last year, more than 80% of the students sent to summer school were able to go on to the next grade.

On Monday night, the DOE heard from angry parents. The department explained that the standards for going to the next grade this year were higher, so that's why so many students were not allowed to move up to the next grade.
