Staten Island: A 16-year-old girl is awaiting charges after her fetus was found inside a trash bag on a Staten Island driveway Wednesday afternoon, according to police sources.

Police sources say officers responded to a call around 12:30 p.m. at 147 Lafayette Avenue near Henderson Street in New Brighton. Upon their arrival, they found the fetus wrapped in a garbage bag.

They say the girl, who was six months pregnant at the time, either lost or gave birth to a baby in her home without her parents knowing.

Sources say she dumped the fetus in the trash and then went to school. When she started feeling ill, she checked into a hospital where doctors learned of her pregnancy and alerted authorities.

Neighbors say they are shocked by the discovery.

"They found the baby in the garbage? I mean, my mind's just twisted up, I ain't know what to say," said a local. "It's crazy, I ain't never heard nobody do nothing like that at all."

"To not appreciate the life of somebody, that's not right. That's ungrateful," said another.

"Call 311 or something like that to get rid of it. To throw it in the garbage like that, that's just sick," said a third.

Doctors have yet to determine whether the girl had a premature birth or a miscarriage.
